FoICT and Mapenane School of Specialisation Aim for Gold in Coding and Robotics. The Department of Basic Education has been working on making coding and robotics a mandatory subject by 2025 for all students.
This project will be launched at Mapenane School of Specialisation. Research and Innovation was the focus of the project launch at Zone 6 Ga-Rankuwa on 17 August 2023.
FoICT and Mapenane School of Specialisation Aim for Gold in Coding and Robotics
TUT is renowned for its academic excellence and is the only university in South Africa with a Faculty of Information and Communication Technology. It was invited to give the learners the opportunity to inspire and empower them on their new path.
Technology-savvy learners have fertile minds and attitudes that can thrive in the technological space. Since they grew up in the digital age, operating any digital gadget is natural for them, so they don’t need a manual. Providing them with an enabling and conducive learning environment is all they need.
Several environmental factors, including the school’s location, contributed to the school’s initial poor performance, according to Lydia Moseki, principal of Mapenane Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialization. Although she was optimistic, she was not convinced that the narrative would change.
Educators at our school work tirelessly to cultivate African minds. The quality of our results is something we take pride in. In most cases, we also achieve good averages in our results. Additionally, we want to provide learners with holistic development by integrating extracurricular activities into their education,” she added.
A number of guests attended, including FoICT staff, Matome Chiloane, Yvonne Mooke, Ward CIIr Violet Phalwane, and members of the community at large.
The MEC emphasized in his speech that the initiative aims to empower South Africa’s future generations of leaders by nurturing talent across key disciplines. We are focusing on sharpening and driving the next generation of lean leaders.”
In order for learners to succeed in their future careers, coding and robotics are essential.
Our mission is to enhance technological learning in the modern world by equipping teachers and students with practical skills and knowledge needed to deal with the rapidly developing digital world. Bongani Makofane, Schools’ Coding and Robotics Coach from Resolute Education, said, “The jobs and careers of tomorrow are not defined or created yet, but we know they will require technical skills.”.
The need for learners to learn and practice using technology was highlighted by one learner. The experience allows them to gain first-hand experience by doing research using technology as well as other solutions they can apply creatively, critically, and collaboratively.
According to the Principal, their goal is to achieve gold and to see their learners reach places that weren’t accessible to them previously. “We are also training educators so they can be fully enthusiastic and motivated about this initiative. Our wholehearted commitment to participating globally in project-based learning is supported by institutions like TUT.”
