With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) and the Department of Marketing, Supply Chain and Sport Management at Tshwane University of Technology, stakeholders within the Automotive Retail Aftermarket will have the opportunity to further their education by pursuing a Diploma in Retail Business Management.
The deal will allow members of RMI and their employees to enhance their knowledge and skills by enrolling for a fully online qualification, developed especially for the Retail Motor Industry, that will last three years.
This program’s accreditation was delayed due to the COVID pandemic, but Dr Elizma Wannenburg, Head of TUT’s Department of Marketing, Supply Chain, and Sport Management, confirmed in April 2023 that everything was in place for its official start in July 2023.
RMI and TUT Announce New Study Opportunity for Members
By signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), RMI and TUT commit to creating a culture and environment of innovation and education between industry and university. Retail Motor Industry Organisation CEO, Jakkie Olivier, recognizes the Diploma in Retail Business Management as a commendable achievement.
During the first cohort of employers and employees, Olivier says a historic event will take place. I am extremely proud of the RMI’s accomplishment in delivering this qualification, especially via our online delivery method.”
As Dr Wannenburg explains, fully online learning offers members a convenient and flexible way to actively participate in education that will provide value and benefits to both learners and employers.
Furthermore, Wannenburg pointed out that the fully online mode would allow participants to study at their own pace. Providing this opportunity for employees to develop themselves will result in increased productivity, satisfaction levels, and employee retention. Wannenburg expressed her gratitude for the trust the RMI has placed in her department, saying that these initiatives will affect the South African economy positively.
Several academic programmes offered at a number of universities around South Africa were evaluated by Louis van Huyssteen, RMI National Training Director. Despite the fact that this online program is ideal and applicable to all of our members, it is offered in a manner that will allow them to access it wherever they are in the world.”
Over the years, Olivier says that the organization has focused heavily on professionalizing the industry. The University encourages institutions of higher education to collaborate more closely with industry to provide learners with qualifications that are relevant to their specific fields.
The RMI’s call was heeded by TUT and we are looking forward to developing additional programmes to improve the quality and professionalism within the retail motor industry. Retail Business Management Diploma is offered at NQF level 6 and ideally suited for employers and employees with a range of business experience.”
As Olivier adds, the RMI expects to work with Sector Education Training Authorities (SETAs) to start with possible grant opportunities for employers, RMI constituent trade associations, and TUTs. In 2024, it is possible that such grants and possibly bursaries will be available.
As unemployment figures rise and the demand for well-experienced managers in the automotive aftermarket sector increases, the RMI believes education is key. The key to achieving success in a highly competitive market is to differentiate yourself and educate yourself.
By actively identifying potential candidates who might be interested in becoming part of the first cohort of students, Olivier encourages employers in the motor sales, motor parts, equipment, and tyre sales sectors to promote the opportunity. It is important for employers to engage with their staff actively to avoid disappointment as applications for this specialized qualification will open soon.
