As Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Tshwane University of Technology, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our students at the beginning of the 2023 academic year.

During your journey to Tshwane University of Technology, we do not know how many rivers you crossed. The number of mountains you have climbed and the steepness of the valleys you have climbed are unknown to us. You may have arrived here by road, rail, or pathway.

While you might be the first member of your family to attend university, we know that you won’t be the last. The first year you attended school might have been paid for by a family loan. The cost of your university education might have been paid for by your parents selling cattle. The National Student Finance Aid Scheme may be beneficial to you and your parents. Good Samaritans may be able to help you out.

 

There have been sacrifices made, there have been tears shed, there have been expectations and hopes invested in you. You know this. We are here to tell you that your arrival at the Tshwane University of Technology is not by chance, not by accident, and is not by luck, no matter where you come from, whatever your circumstances. Having a hunger for knowledge that makes a difference has brought you here thanks to your tenacious determination and drive for success.

Welcome to People’s University, especially to the first-year students; a university that prepares you for tomorrow, for the work of tomorrow. Through Tshwane University of Technology, you will be able to acquire the skills necessary to do, and create, the jobs of the future if you put in the necessary effort.

It’s time to get down to business now that you’re here. To be considered among the talented million young people in South Africa pursuing university education at this time, you need to prove to your parents, to Tshwane University of Technology and to the nation as a whole that you are deserving of the privilege.

This new semester, we challenge you to make those promises to yourself: that you will not waste a day, that you will not ruin a week, that you will not waste a month, that you will not waste a semester. Those students at Tshwane University of Technology who work purposefully, constantly, and consistently are the only ones who succeed.

There is no doubt that all of you possess talent, but now you must prove first to yourself and to those who care about you that you also possess discipline. Good isn’t good enough now that you’re here; great is what you need to become.

No matter how old you are, or whether you are in your first, second or final year, every academic year offers you a new opportunity for advancement.  Our Pretoria city campuses would like to welcome you all.
