The Machel-Mandela Fellowship
In honour of former South African President Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel, the Brenthurst Foundation is inviting applications from young graduates for the Machel-Mandela Fellowship Program. As the most prestigious internship of its kind in Africa, the Machel-Mandela Fellowship aims to be the most sought after internship in the world. Through it, Brenthurst Foundation aims to nurture Africa’s future leaders and sharpen its focus on Africa’s burgeoning young population.
A minimum of six months of full-time fellowship will be available. Appointment is expected to begin in May 2023 for the selected candidate. In addition to South Africa, fellows can be from other countries as well. Those positions will be based in Parktown, Johannesburg, at the Brenthurst Foundation’s headquarters. A number of projects and activities will be carried out by Fellows with the Foundation’s staff, some of which will require foreign travel. From writing a discussion paper on an economic development topic to hosting events and helping out in the office, the Fellow will be responsible for a wide range of tasks.
As part of the fellowship, the Foundation will provide a monthly stipend as well as accommodation, if needed (subject to Foundation policy). A foundation agreement may cover other work-related expenses as well.
Requirements:
- Younger than 30
- Master’s degree
- English is excellent in both spoken and written form. An advantage would be to be able to speak African and other languages.
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Self-motivated, reliable, and enthusiastic, and requires minimal supervision
- Exceptional deadline management skills
- Having a thorough understanding of all the basic IT skills
- An asset is the ability to copyedit and proofread
- Dedicated to strengthening Africa’s economy and driven by a strong passion for Africa.
- The ability to understand the politics and economics of Africa

- You should write a letter of interest outlining your interest in the position and your skills you can bring to the position.
- An essay or a published article, of any length, can be used as a writing sample.
- Start date at the earliest possible time.

It is the 28th of February 2022 which is the deadline for applications. In light of the large number of applications, we will only contact those who have been shortlisted. Brenthurst Foundation will not be responding to your application by 31 March 2022, so please assume it has been denied.
