TUT AI Hub Director Prof Anish Kurien Appointed

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, announced that she has been appointed to the position of Acting Director for the TUT Hub of the Artificial Intelligence Institute of South Africa (AIISA).

The AIISA is pleased to announce Prof Anish Kurien as Acting Director of the TUT Hub of AIISA. AIISA was launched jointly by TUT and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) last year by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies.

Professor Anish Kurien specializes in next-generation wireless communication networks and is a full professor in Electrical Engineering. Over twenty million Rands (R20,000,000) in industrial and international grants have been awarded to him with industrial partners, including Telkom SA Ltd, Nokia South Africa, the CSIR, the NRF/DSI, TETA, Erasmus+ Grants, the French Embassy in South Africa, and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the largest organization in the world dedicated to advancing technology, is Prof Kurien’s professional association.

Prof Kurien has a doctorate in electrical engineering specializing in telecommunications technology. He has extensive experience with digital transformation of networks and the digitization of economies.

As of 2010, he is the Node Director of the French South African Institute of Technology (F’SATI), which has been established since 1997 as a bilateral initiative between France and South Africa.

As of now, Prof Kurien has supervised and supervised 39 postgraduate students. He has published over 100 scientific articles in journals, books, book chapters, and conference proceedings. Mobile network optimization, radio resource management, and wireless communications are all areas of interest to him.
