A graduate of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), Mvulane Reed, received the highest academic achievement award for engineering technology lady in South Africa for 2022 from the Institute of Professional Engineering Technologists (IPET).
Seven Universities of Technology in South Africa participate in IPET every year, celebrating graduates across all engineering disciplines.
TUT Aspiring Civil Engineer Named Best Female Technologist in Country
She competed against 13 other female graduates from other universities who also received recognition, living up to TUT’s outstanding reputation. Averaging 83,4% in the cohort of female graduates, she emerged as the top achiever.

Reed doesn’t just have brilliant skills, he’s multitalented as well. Her University of Johannesburg placement in Civil Engineering was unsuccessful, so she enrolled in an Engineering Metallurgy Bachelor of Technology instead. She decided to pursue her true passion by enrolling in civil engineering after completing her degree.
As soon as I realized what I wanted to do, I followed my passion. It is first and foremost my parents who deserve all the credit for my success. With no funding at the time of registration, going back to university to pursue a different career path was not an easy decision. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme didn’t qualify me since I already had a degree and I was a missing middle student. The best my parents could do for me was to support me,” Reed said.
Despite her accomplishments, she admits that they have opened up doors for her.
The TUT has nominated me to attend the University Gustave Eiffel (Paris) for the academic year 2023/2024 as a student exchange participant. With my previous experience as a laboratory assistant and facilitator and assessor, Reed hopes to use these certificates to aid and encourage younger learners, especially women, to enroll in Engineering graphic design courses.”
She is first and foremost passionate about Civil Engineering, but her other goal is to make an impact in the South African railway industry.
My interest in Transportation Engineering developed while I was studying at TUT. I am currently seeking internship opportunities in the Railway Engineering industry as part of my goal to further my studies in Transportation Engineering.” Reed explained.
IPET Chief Executive Officer Johan de Koker has been honoring engineering technology graduates with the highest academic achievement since 2003 to promote gender equality.
A 60 mm medal and certificate are awarded to the highest academically achieving female and male graduates from every university. Gold-plated medals and certificates are awarded to the best South African graduates, ladies and gents. Among the 2022 cohort of female graduates, Ms Reed had the highest average of 83.4%,” de Koker said.
Engineers who graduate from South African universities of technology receive the IPET award as their highest honor. A Professional Engineering Technologist is a registered engineer who is certified by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and can earn these awards online.
We fell behind a year because of the restrictive Covid-19 situation. We celebrated and awarded graduates from both the 2021 and 2022 cohorts at the same ceremony this year. The most successful graduate (lady and gentleman) from the class of 2021 was Ms Govender from DUT (Durban), who averaged 86%. TUT’s Lady of the Year for 2021, Lindi Erasmus, who is also a Civil Engineering student, kept her average at 77%, said de Koker.
