As a result of Professor Mandla Msimanga, Professor at the Department of Physics, TUT participated in this initiative for the first time. She spearheaded this project and ensured that TUT became a member of the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS).).
“It should be noted that the summer school was attended not only by physics students, but also by a few postgraduate students from Engineering and the Built Environment, as well as by external institutions such as the Agricultural Research Council (ARC).
Additionally, Prof Msimanga explained that the Summer School would provide students with a course in basic programming which introduces them to Python and to the Linux command line and bash scripting. Physicists, mathematicians, and engineers use these high-tech tools constantly.

Throughout the semester, students received tutorials, quizzes, and assignments in which they had to solve problems on their own and learn on their own.
Keletso Lebesana, a postgraduate student in Prof Msimanga’s lab at iThemba LABS, placed among the top three students nationwide in his category. “I am very excited about this!” Keletso said when asked about her achievement. This accomplishment inspires me to think that there is no limit to what I can accomplish in my self-development journey.” TUT Physics Department
Dr Our Summer School coordinator, Nangamso Nyangiwe, said it was an excellent opportunity for our postgraduate students to learn from experts and benchmark with peers.
TUT is producing future-prepared students by having a student receive third place nationally from over 600 students.
According to Prof Msimanga, the Physics Department of TUT is committed to actively promoting NITheCS activities within the institution as part of the national 4IR efforts.
