This two-day event unfolded at the Pretoria Campus on 27-28 November 2023, showcasing the latest developments and breakthroughs across diverse fields.

Themed “Innovation Transforming Technologies for Resilient and Smart Sustainable Development,” this year event focused on the brightest minds who recently completed their Master’s and Doctoral dissertations. The program featured a comprehensive lineup emphasizing the critical intersection of innovation, technology, and sustainability.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
Prof Brendon Shongwe, Assistant Dean for Postgraduate, Research, and Innovation, highlighted the paramount importance of innovation and sustainability in research. The overarching goal was to pave the way for a sustainable future, not only for South Africa but for the global community at large.
Showcasing Impactful Research: Addressing Real-world Issues
The event comprised two combined parallel sessions, spotlighting a multitude of research and innovation projects with direct and positive impacts on society. These projects addressed pressing issues, demonstrating their potential to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Fostering Collaboration: A Platform for Exchange of Ideas
Prof Shongwe expressed the faculty’s commitment to fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas among researchers. The showcased innovative approaches to sustainability aimed to create a valuable platform for Master’s and Doctoral students to present their research and engage with a broader academic community.
Keynote Address: Prof Olawale Popoola on Energy Solutions for Inclusive Societies
Keynote speaker Prof Olawale Popoola, Director at the Centre for Energy and Electric Power (CEEP), delved into the topic, ‘Adept Energy Estimation and Power Systems Planning to Use Computational Modeling based on Identification/Assessment of Disrupter(s).’ Prof Popoola, heading the DSI – NRF SARChI Chair in Energy Solutions for Inclusive and Sustainable Societies, emphasized initiatives focused on sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat energy poverty and enhance accessibility.
Inspiring the Next Generation: A Call to Young and Emerging Researchers
Prof Popoola encouraged young and emerging researchers to contribute to energy accessibility, affordable electricity, and poverty reduction. Emphasizing the alignment with Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, 11, 12, and 13, he underscored the potential for research to create an inclusive society with substantial economic prospects.
Acknowledging Excellence: Recognition for Outstanding Presenters
The event concluded with a panel of judges awarding tokens of appreciation to the best doctoral and master’s oral and poster presenters, acknowledging their exceptional contributions to advancing research and innovation.
