The Argus Newspaper Group, which owned The World newspaper, was sold to the Independent Group, and Dr Nzima gained the copyright to his photograph after many years of attempting to do so. Nzima’s famous image has been ranked among the 100 most influential images of all time by Time Magazine.
Dr Sam Nzima’s story
In Lillydale, Mpumalanga, on 8 August 1934, Dr Sam Masana Nzima was born. Protesting students were confronted by police on 16 June 1976, which began the Soweto uprising. At the corner of Moema and Vilakazi streets, near Phefeni High School, Dr Nzima captured this photograph of Hector Pieterson, who was fatally injured. Mbuyisa Makhubo carries Hector, with Antoinette Pieterson’s sister beside them, depicting an emotionally charged scene.
Due to the harassment he received by the security police after The World published the photo the following day, Dr Nzima had to hide. A security police team kept him under surveillance when he relocated back to Lillydale.
When he tried to publish Pieterson’s image, the most famous of his pictures, Dr Nzima suffered a great deal of torment. His last home was Lillydale, where he managed a photography school before his death in 2018. Bohlabela District Council and Lillydale Municipality Council were among his civic councils.
