Fulbright Scholars will be residing at TUT for the next academic year 2024. TUT scholars will collaborate with Robert Chirwa, professor of Computer Engineering and Mathematics from Bluegrass Community College, in developing courses, delivering scholarly presentations, and advancing the curriculum.
TUT Welcomes Prolific Fulbright Scholar to Its Shores
“Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Engagement, Dr. Vathiswa Papu-Zamxaka, says Fulbright scholars are highly respected specialists in their fields and to receive a Fulbright grant is a remarkable honor that acknowledges their pre-eminence and influence in their fields.
“We must also highlight that serving as the institutional host of a Fulbright scholar is a mark of distinction that increases the international and national visibility of our university and that of our Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.”
Prof Chirwa is honored to be hosted by the ICT Faculty, said Dr. Etienne van Wyk, the Faculty’s Executive Dean. In addition to lecturing and conducting research, he will provide research guidance to the Department of Computer Science. He will be a great source of learning for us.”
Professor Chirwa shared stories of his early education in Malawi and how he was able to get a scholarship to the United States to study for his Master’s degree at the University of Kentucky in 1988 through his work at Chancellor College.
In 1999, he became an instructor at Lexington Community College (then Bluegrass Community and Technical College) after returning to study for a Ph.D. in computer science. His current position at the same college is Professor of Computer Engineering and Mathematics.
The fact that we can build relationships with scholars, scientists, and faculty members around the world is fantastic, as it allows us to cross-fertilize different systems, approaches, and standards. The TUT culture is something I’m looking forward to experiencing in South Africa,” Prof Chirwa said.
As a Fulbright Scholar, Prof Robert Chirwa is wishing the University the best of luck.
