In a remarkable display of skill and endurance, TUT’s SunChaser 4 solar car completed a staggering 110 laps, covering nearly 473 kilometers during the 12-hour challenge. This accomplishment not only secured their championship title but also surpassed their own record from the previous year.
Challenging Event at Red Star Raceway
The 2023 Bridgestone Ilanga Cup took place at the Red Star Raceway in Delmas, Mpumalanga, providing a challenging environment for the participating renewable technology engineers and enthusiasts.
The 4.3km state-of-the-art closed track, coupled with a scorching 32-degree Celsius temperature, tested the vehicles’ performance and endurance.
SunChaser 4 Dominates from the Start
Despite initial nerves and excitement, TUT’s SunChaser 4 took an early lead and maintained its momentum throughout the competition. The solar car showcased its reliability and efficiency by navigating the winding track with precision.
Surpassing Previous Records
Even with three damaged tires during the challenge, the TUT Solar Car Team managed to surpass their 2022 record of 94 laps. The team’s resilience and dedication were evident as they overcame challenges, solidifying their position as leaders in solar car technology.
