TUT Young Farmer Participates in Food for Mzansi. Dimpho Xaba, a 33-year-old Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) alum, proudly represented the university at the recent “Food for Mzansi” event. The platform, dedicated to promoting sustainability, rural development, and agriculture, drew over 300 farmers.

TUT collaborated with the Youth in Agriculture and Rural Development (YARD) to celebrate Gauteng Farmers’ Day, supporting and honoring modern farmers in the region.

Connecting with GEYODI

TUT extended a special invitation to exhibit services to the Gender, Youth, and People with Disabilities (GEYODI) organization at the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment (GDARDE). Xaba expressed excitement about the gathering, emphasizing the importance of GEYODI’s initiatives for the growth and empowerment of marginalized communities in agriculture.

A Unique Opportunity

According to Xaba, Gauteng Farmers’ Day provided a unique opportunity to connect with fellow farmers, agricultural experts, and industry professionals. The event catered to seasoned farmers, inspiring enthusiasts, and those passionate about sustainable farming practices.

Dr Sam Motsuenyane Foundation Support

The Dr Sam Motsuenyane Foundation, which funded a TUT student in 2022 and received over 60 applications for 2023, was also present. Themba Mathibe, the Foundation’s CEO, confirmed support for students enrolled in the Advanced Diploma in Crop Sciences, highlighting their commitment to collaboration with TUT.

Xaba Farming Journey

Xaba’s journey in farming began in 2019 when he enrolled in a National Diploma in Agricultural Extension and Development at TUT. Hailing from Maboloka in the Northwest, close to Brits, he recalled the fascination of passing large farms on his way home. Xaba emphasized the resilience required in farming, considering challenges such as crime, climate change, disease outbreaks, and high input costs.

Academic and Professional Achievements

Xaba, currently a lecturer at the Department of Crop Sciences, has been actively involved in various university structures and committees. His areas of interest include Vegetable production, Biological Nitrogen Fixation, Crop production, and Farmer Development. Holding an M Tech Degree in Agriculture, he is also a PhD candidate.

International Exposure and Entrepreneurial Ventures

In 2022, the National Youth Development Agency sponsored Xaba to attend a summer school in Brazil. This exposure led to the award of a 136-hectare farm by the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development. Xaba now leads a farming business with four young collaborators, focusing on grains, vegetables, and beekeeping, including honey processing.
