TVET College Benchmarks TUT Disability Unit Services. The Tshwane University of Technology Disability Unit hosted a benchmarking event at the Pretoria Campus Disability Laboratory towards the end of July in response to the Government’s call for higher education institutions to collaborate more with TVET colleges.
TVET College Benchmarks TUT Disability Unit Services
The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, said the department would provide support for TVET colleges through a variety of measures in 2015. TVET colleges and technology universities must form more articulation routes.
Around 20 TVET colleges have partnered with TUT.
Additionally, the Higher and Further Education Disability Services Association (HEDSA) online symposium in 2021 encouraged institutions to partner with TVET colleges in their geographical zones to benchmark and collaborate with students with disabilities.
Students with impairments at both TUT and Tshwane North TVET College will benefit from improved support services, accessibility, and inclusivity. Creating an inclusive and welcoming learning environment for students with disabilities is the goal of this collaboration.
It was a very productive benchmarking meeting. Both TUT’s disability practitioners and the visitors learned a great deal from the Tshwane TVET Disability Unit’s approach to serving and supporting its students with disabilities.
Since the relationship is important, the two institutions agreed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is the next step to allowing disability practitioners at each institution to work together. Students with disabilities are accommodated in almost all campus activities, thanks to ensuring universal access between the two institutions.
Dr Elikanah Lumadi, the Acting Campus Director and Head of SDS at Ga-Rankuwa Campus added: “TUT’s Disability Services’ benchmarking visit encouraged our own practitioners to do more than what we are doing now. Several assistive devices were demonstrated to visitors in TUT’s disability laboratory. Students with disabilities were also explained how to register and receive support.”
The goal of the collaboration is to create a more inclusive, accessible and supportive educational environment for students living with disabilities through collaboration between Ivy Morulane Student Development Support Practitioner and Morulane University.
Our skills and experience can help students with disabilities achieve academic success and develop personally by creating an inclusive culture that extends beyond our institutions.”
“We hope that our partnership will continue to flourish and that we will stay in touch through other events and engagements,” said Gift Chweu, Head of the Department for Student Development Support. We hope to continue exchanging information and supporting one another as we fulfill the Minister of Education’s mandate.”
SNE students at tertiary level will now have access to the same education using TVET College equipment and devices, according to Thapelo Motokolo, Acting Campus Manager at Tshwane North Technical College.
The facilities at TUT will be accessible to our institution without any difficulties. In addition, the government needs to allocate equal budgets for SNE students and encourage their articulation with TUT or TVET programs, not just for SNE programs.
Simply because we are neighbours and work in the same province, we are excited about the collaboration. This collaboration will greatly benefit from sharing good practices since our students share the same challenges,” concluded Thapelo.
